The Double Down™ Insulated Hat targets one of your body's biggest sources of heat loss: your head. Likely the warmest hat you’ll ever own, its contoured design can be worn on its own or layered over a ball cap. Insulated with THINDOWN® and lined with high-loft fleece, it offers outstanding heat retention and moisture-wicking performance. Engineered to trap more warmth per ounce, it’s the most efficient piece in the lineup. Think of it as an extra layer that’s easy to take on and off. Foldable ear flaps provide extra coverage without compromising hearing.

Why We Made It

We designed the Double Down™ Insulated Hat to stop significant heat loss through your head. A simple stocking cap might keep you “warm enough,” but most knit hats still let a surprising amount of heat escape. As we explained in our "The Science of Staying Warm" article, preventing heat loss from your head and torso is the key to staying warm on stand.

The THINDOWN® insulation makes this hat ridiculously warm, and the design is built for versatility. Hunters who want extra insulation over a ball cap will appreciate the contoured fit. There is no need to swap hats when you get to your stand, just pull this one on over the top.

The Science of Staying Warm

Human temperature regulation follows the core–shell model, where the body prioritizes keeping the core (head and torso) warm while allowing the extremities, the shell, to cool if necessary.

In cold environments, the brain rapidly reduces blood flow to the hands and feet through peripheral vasoconstriction to conserve heat for survival. This is why fingers and toes are especially vulnerable to getting cold.

Cold extremities are usually the result of insufficient insulation across the rest of the body, not just exposure at the hands or feet.

If the torso, arms, and legs are losing heat, the body further restricts blood flow to the shell, making even the warmest gloves and boots ineffective.

By contrast, when the entire body, especially the core, is well insulated, overall heat loss drops and warm blood continues to circulate to the extremities. This preserves dexterity, strength, and performance in the cold.

In practical terms, warm hands and feet start with full-body insulation. The body functions as a single thermal system, not isolated parts. To keep the extremities working, the whole body must be protected.
