Why We Made It

We designed the Pack-Down™ Puffer Mitts for the cold walk in, the walk out, and long stretches behind the glass. Anyone who’s grabbed an aluminum bow riser or climbing stick on a sub-freezing morning knows how quickly exposed hands can become a problem.

These mitts use high-quality treated down to deliver serious warmth with very little weight, but just as importantly, they breathe. Hands sweat. Wet hands get cold. Many waterproof mittens seal in moisture, leaving your hands colder than when you started. The treated down in these mitts helps move moisture away from your hands, keeping them dry and therefore warm.

Pull them on when temperatures drop, stuff them away when you don’t need them, and keep your hands ready when it counts. You just might find that these are your go-to mitts for just about every cold-weather pursuit.

The Science of Staying Warm

Human temperature regulation follows the core–shell model, where the body prioritizes keeping the core (head and torso) warm while allowing the extremities, the shell, to cool if necessary.

In cold environments, the brain rapidly reduces blood flow to the hands and feet through peripheral vasoconstriction to conserve heat for survival. This is why fingers and toes are especially vulnerable to getting cold.

Cold extremities are usually the result of insufficient insulation across the rest of the body, not just exposure at the hands or feet.

If the torso, arms, and legs are losing heat, the body further restricts blood flow to the shell, making even the warmest gloves and boots ineffective.

By contrast, when the entire body, especially the core, is well insulated, overall heat loss drops and warm blood continues to circulate to the extremities. This preserves dexterity, strength, and performance in the cold.

In practical terms, warm hands and feet start with full-body insulation. The body functions as a single thermal system, not isolated parts. To keep the extremities working, the whole body must be protected.
